Talk Service Problems with the Talk Service
/ Telephone Adapter
Wanadoo's Talk service allows you to make calls using your Broadband Internet connection.
Unlike some other Voice Over IP (VoIP) systems, it allows this to be done using a simple standard telephone, rather than clumsy headsets as with PC-based systems. You don't need to be right near the computer either.
The audio of your call is converted into data which is sent through the Internet connection, so you save on the telephone call charges. Indeed, calling another Livebox is free at all times, even during the day. Reduced price rates are offered on calls to landlines and mobiles, and also selected international destinations too.
A few things to remember:
- You need to plug a phone into the bottom of the Livebox, into the socket
furthest away from the Power (of the two telephone sockets there)
- You need a touch tone phone, a cordless one should be OK too (though some
phones may not work as good as others, if at all).
It is not recommended that you use just one phone and keep unplugging it from the BT line, as you may miss calls while it is unplugged from one or the other.
- The service needs to be activated. This is usually done automatically now,
and the telephone light will indicate if it has been.
If it is not on, try resubmitting the Username and Password in the Configure Livebox page, as mentioned here.
If it is still not coming on after a few days, ring Wanadoo and they can activate it manually for you (Incidentally, this is the same process as it shows towards the end of the old Setup Guide, so you will need the S/N and MAC; the page is restricted for use by Wanadoo Support so you cannot do this yourself)
- If it is working, you will hear 5 beeps on the phone line, then the dial
tone
- The Internet connection needs to be working for the Talk service to work.
Also, if the connection to the Internet is lost, you will be cut off: the
phone will most likely just go dead.
- If you have a slower connection (ie. 512kbps rather than 1 meg or higher)
you may need to not download heavily while using the Talk service. It needs to
be able to maintain the quality of connection or you may experience
problems.
- It is best to use the Talk service to MAKE calls, and the BT phone to
RECEIVE calls. This will prevent you from having to give out a second number
to everyone.
One exception is when ringing someone who has a Livebox too - best to ring their Livebox directly as it is free to do so at all times.
